Changes to the menu: Bender’s now home to rotating Sunday pop-ups
June 8, 2016
UPDATE 3:30 P.M. : A reader informs me that Mad’Mzelles Poutine has been a pop-up regular at Bender’s in the past and is “really good” to boot.
ORIGINAL POST: Bender’s Bar and Grill, South Van Ness’ go-to source for a boozy meal, is now home to a rotating series of Sunday pop-up restaurants.
One of the new popups, Mad’Mzelles Poutine, has the first Sunday slot. According to a Facebook post, four more pop-ups will fill out the remaining Sundays of the month, and serve starting at 5 p.m. Here is the roster:
1st Sundays – Madmzelles Poutine (off for July)
2nd Sundays – Chino Loco – Jamaican Curry and Jerk Chicken
3rd Sundays – Lechon Asada -Cuban Roast Pork and More
4th Sundays – La Cubanita – Cubano Grill
5th Sundays – Counter Offer Fried Chicken
The news comes a little over two months since Bender’s ended its free Sunday barbecues, citing fire department concerns and declining interest. To help fill the void, Counter Offer, which runs the bar’s kitchen most days of the week, started serving Sunday brunch in early April. Counter Offer owner/chef Jake Ersland said he has since decided to discontinue their so-called “Bartender’s Breakfast” and rent out the kitchen instead.
