After 64 years on Mission Street, Marian’s is going out of business (updated)
November 16, 2015
UPDATE 11/17: Marian’s Apparel will shut its doors on Dec. 31, according to Joe Anker and Andy Thompson, owners of the 64-year-old business.
Thompson said he and Anker actually decided to call it quits a couple of months ago but have kept quiet about their plans because they wanted to make sure they gave their landlord proper notice.
“We’ve kind of been trending that way for a while,” he said.
Asked if the store’s pending closure made him sad, Anker said quite the contrary.
“No, I’m really happy. I’ve been doing this too long. Time to make a change,” he said.
This morning, the 2040 Mission St. store was particularly busy as items had been marked down to anywhere from $5 to $50.
Anker said things have been hectic ever since the store hung signs for its going-out-of-business sale.
“It’s the prices, that’s what it’s all about,” he said.
ORIGINAL POST: I was deeply saddened to learn from a friend this morning that Marian’s Apparel, which opened near 16th and Mission streets 64 years ago, is shutting its doors. One of the last of Mission Street’s old family-owned businesses, Marian’s remained old school in many ways, even offering credit to its customers. I will update this post with more information about the store’s closure. In the meantime, I urge you to read more about this wonderful business, which Capp Street Crap profiled in September.
